Start with the content you have the rights to license, then prepare archive metadata and correction procedures. Evaluate offers against usage scope, payment and the audience relationship without assuming automatic eligibility or guaranteed referral growth.
The news section is based on Google’s 15 October 2026 announcement about a worldwide pilot. It does not establish open enrolment or uniform terms for Arab markets or Turkey. The archive and offer evaluation framework is CROMBA’s editorial and commercial interpretation; contractual details need specialist legal review.
What Google announced
On 15 October 2026, Google said more than 400 publications worldwide were participating in its News AI pilot. It pays participating publishers to supply and use enhanced content for AI features, including in-depth article overviews on Google News publisher pages and customizable audio briefings, with attribution and direct links. [1]
This expands a pilot launched the previous year. It does not announce that every publisher can enrol. The update does not disclose full pricing or deal terms, or identify specific Arab partners. Separate the announced facts from expectations about a particular institution’s eligibility or potential revenue.
Identify what the publisher can license
Begin a content licensing inventory covering daily reporting, original investigations, explanatory pieces, photographs and video. Distinguish material the institution owns from contributions and agency content. Publishing something on your website does not automatically mean every element can be licensed onward.
For an Arabic or bilingual archive, connect translations to their original articles and record authors, publication and update dates, and media sources. This makes the scope of a potential offer easier to define. Detailed rights and contractual obligations need review by the appropriate legal specialist before agreement.
Make each article traceable
Editorial readiness begins with a stable article identifier and URL, an accurate headline, an author name and a correction history. Separate reporting from opinion and preserve clear relationships between the text, media and sources. These practices help manage content even without a licensing partnership.
Archive size alone should not determine the proposal. Identify topics covered consistently, the original knowledge the newsroom produces and how current it is. This is CROMBA’s commercial interpretation of content value, rather than Google’s published acceptance criteria.

Discuss use, attribution and corrections
Request a specific description of the product using the material, how it will be displayed and whether the scope is limited to a particular experiment. Distinguish display or summarization from model training. The programme announcement alone does not establish that all these uses are included.
Review where the publisher’s name and link appear, and how corrections or requests to withdraw an article reach the other party. Check duration, languages, territories and any exclusivity. These are questions for evaluating an offer, not a description of Google’s unpublished contract provisions.
Assess the effect on revenue and the audience
Evaluate payment alongside the cost of preparing and maintaining the content, then examine the audience relationship. Ask which exposure and referral data are actually available, and define how to follow article traffic, sources, subscriptions or returning visits where suitable measurement is possible.
Keep a baseline before the partnership and record other coverage and distribution changes. A simultaneous increase in traffic does not establish that the agreement caused it. Reach figures should not replace management’s central question: does this relationship help fund journalism and connect it with a relevant audience?
Our YouTube strategy guide for news organizations offers a complementary view of distribution and memberships. It is not evidence of licensing outcomes.
Start with your institution’s readiness
Begin with an inventory of one section, documenting material rights, metadata quality and correction procedures. CROMBA’s guide to digital communication teams in newsrooms explores how audience management relates to editorial decisions and complements this work.
